Taurine deficiency and DCM

In the cane, taurine is an amino acid synthesized mainly in the liver and in the central nervous system. In addition to its main function of conjugation of bile acids, taurine plays an important role in the health of the heart, as it is the most abundant free amino acid in the heart.
Even if it is not considered an essential amino acid, several studies have associated the nutritional deficiency of taurine with the development of dilatative cardiomyopathy (DCM) and other pathologies (eyes, reproductive insufficiency, retardation of growth, central nervous system dysfunction, skeletal malformations and others). The particular complexity of the metabolism of taurine in the dog seems to be a factor that predisposes to the development of its deficiency in conjunction with increased metabolic needs or intestinal malabsorption.
Diverse breeds of canine, such as the Dobermann, the Alano and the Irish Wolfhound, present a hereditary form of DCM. All of the internal researches of these races have been carried out on the association between taurine deficiency and the onset of DCM, with results that did not confirm a clear and direct causal link.
Although it can be said that any breed is capable of developing DCM due to insufficient levels of taurine, some studies have shown that this pathology occurs more frequently in some dog breeds such as the Golden Retriever, the American Cocker Spaniel, the Terranova, the English Setter and the Labrador Retriever.
However, there is a poor understanding of how the plasma concentration of taurine correlates with its concentration in the cane's heart muscle.
Recently, in the Golden Retriever, an increase in the number of cases of DCM suspected to be correlated with diet has been reported. The purpose of this study is to describe the history of the diet, the echocardiographic results, the concentrations of taurine in the blood, and the clinical findings of the Golden Retriever with a diagnosis of DCM and low concentrations of taurine in the blood.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

The subjects of the study were 24 Golden Retrievers, with echographic diagnosis of DCM and low blood levels of taurine. E' stata ottenuta una storia dietetica completa, anamnesi, echocardiografie, esami del sangue e concentrato ematica della taurina before and after the change in diet.
These concentrations have been selected based on the present bibliography, although they have not yet been established by the specific reference intervals for the Golden Retriever.
I cani oggetto dello studio erano alimentati, in average da 2 anni, con crocchette prive di cereali (so called "grain free") and che in etichetta avevano i legumi fra i primi cinque ingredienti. The foods were complete, balanced and formulated to meet the AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) guidelines for dog feeding, but they were not tested for nutritional adequacy and did not follow the WSAVA guidelines.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In tutti i cani meno uno, the return to a diet containing a certain percentage of cereals and the assumption of an integrator of taurine and/or L-carnitine has brought an improvement in the echocardiographic parameters, the symptoms of the disease, has increased the plasma concentration of taurine and has determined the suspension or diminution of cardiac drugs.
In addition, legumes contain anti-nutritive factors such as proteolytic inhibitors and phytates that negatively influence the digestibility and biodisponibility of the precursors of taurine.
Previously, it was shown that dogs with a low energy consumption, fed with a diet poor in sulfur amino acids, showed a minor synthesis of taurine, so they could benefit from higher concentrations of these precursors in the food.
Questi dati underlineano l'importance di ottenere l'anamnnesi dietetica completa in pazienti canini affetti da malita cardiache.

CONCLUSION

Indeed, even taking into consideration the apparently healthy Golden Retriever, a prevalence of low concentrations of taurine is found that could represent a specific sensitivity of the breed to this condition.
Despite the fact that the correlation between nutrition, taurine deficiency and the development of DCM is clear, further studies are needed to better understand the potential interactions between specific food components, types of industrial processes and levels of taurine.
